Trevor Bayliss backs Windies in their World Cup pursuit

Ahead of their fourth ODI against the Windies, England head coach Trevor Bayliss has heaped praises of the hosts by backing them to be the dark horses for the World Cup.

Windies have been dealt a massive boost as we get closer to the tournament, with some of their marquee man in Darren Bravo, Chris Gayle and Andre Russell returning to the team. While the power hitter Gayle and stylish Bravo have been playing against England in the Ongoing series, Russell has been called for the final two games, replacing the injured Kemar Roach.

Windies, who are yet to win a bilateral series for almost five years, sit ninth in the ODI ranking, but Bayliss is of the belief that if their batsmen manage to spell the magic in England, they can well and truly grab their hands on the Coveted World Cup trophy.

“The Windies have been playing some decent cricket over the last 18 months,” said Bayliss. “With the size of their batters and the way some of them hit the ball, there can be a chance of winning that World Cup.”

Marking a brilliant comeback in the ongoing five-match ODI series, the Windies have garnered several accolades of late, with their interim coach Richard Pybus praising their resilience.

“I know the right West Indies combination with a fully-focused side can beat anyone on their day,” Richard Pybus said. “I wasn’t at the World Cup qualifiers but, with the group of guys we have now, we feel confident (we) could take down anyone on their day.”

Commenting further, Pybus also highlighted Chris Gayle’s importance by mentioning his two brilliant knocks in first and second ODI.

“I can’t always on the selectors, but I think Chris has put forward a very resounding case. He’s just class, really. It’s always great guys in your side, who are a bit scary for the opposition, who know Full well what they can deliver.

“In those first two games, Chris was getting a feel for a spongy wicket batting first. It can be a game of two halves in Barbados. He was playing himself through. But, as we have all seen in T20, he can attack that First powerplay brutally. On good wickets, he’ll be going hard pretty early.”

  • Coach Bayliss expects Ben Stokes to be fit for the fourth ODI against Windies

Coach Bayliss expects Ben Stokes to be fit for the fourth ODI against Windies

Having missed his side’s third ODI against Windies – which was anyway called off due to rain – owing to an ankle injury, all-rounder Ben Stokes is expected to be available for the final two games of the five-match series, says England head- Coach Trevor Bayliss.

    Randy Brooks / AFP

Stokes injured his ankle during a practice session in Grenada on Sunday, which led to him missing the third ODI with Alex Hales being called in as a replacement. His absence was touted as only a precautionary measure, with the 27-year-old taking part In the warm-up session on Monday ahead of the game but was finally rested in order to avoid any complications.

As things stand now, head coach Trevor Bayliss highlighted Stokes’ importance to the squad and mentioned that ‘he’d be surprised if Stokes is not ready for the game.’

“He should be fine in two days’ time,” Bayliss was quoted by ESPNCricinfo. “It’s one of things things, he could have batted and fielded today. He said he could feel his ankle a little bit warming up to bowl. We took a conservative approach today and decided not to chance making it worse. I’d be surprised if he’s not right for Wednesday.

“He is important to the squad, as we’ve shown in the past, we’ve gone into one-day tournaments with only five bowlers. We did in Australia 12 months ago and were able to win. It’s not perfect for us but With the players we’ve got in the team and the squad we’re more than capable of winning without him. Players We’ve got in the team and the squad We’re More than capable of winning without him.

“He was probably not as confident as I’ve seen him before when we asked him was he right to play. So straight away it was an easy decision and a learning process for him about how he can look after his body a little better. “

Ben Stokes has been an integral part of England squad in this Caribbean tour, having bowled most overs and leading the batting average for his side. His availability now is expected to boost England’s changes in a series which is currently held at 1-1.

  • Shock Sri Lanka loss major jolt for South Africa

Shock Sri Lanka loss major jolt for South Africa

South Africa’s shock Test series defeat against Sri Lanka came as a major jolt to a team which had become accustomed to dominating Test matches at home.

    Rodger Bosch / AFP

The unheralded Sri Lankans exposed flaws in both South Africa’s top-order batting and their much-vaunted fast bowling attack in winning both Tests in a two-match series.

Coach Ottis Gibson was asked after the second Test in Port Elizabeth whether South Africa’s policy of playing on pace-friendly pitches had affected the form and confidence of the home team’s batsmen, who struggled to totals of 235, 259, 222 and 128 against Sri Lanka .

“No,” he said. “We’ve got runs on these pitches before. We just haven’t batted well enough in this series.”

The reality, though, is that batting struggles have become a trend, with none of the current top six batsmen averaging above 40 since the start of 2018.

Successive series wins against India, Australia and Pakistan were achieved when moderate totals recommended enough because of South Africa’s bowling firepower.

    Some changes seem inevitable.

Gibson’s contract expires after the Cricket World Cup in July and he has refused to comment on the likelihood of staying in the job.

The Sri Lanka series has also put the spotlight on some of South Africa’s ageing players.

Hashim Amla, a kingpin at number three for more than a decade during much he which he had a career average above 50, has not hit a century since 2017 and his average in 15 Tests since his last hundred is a modest 26.07.

He will be 36 when South Africa play their next Test series in India in September and there has been speculation that retirement is imminent.

Captain Faf du Plessis, who together with Quinton de Kock was the only consistent batsman against Sri Lanka, is 34 and opening batsman Dean Elgar is 31.

    – ‘Not good enough’ –

Elgar scored only 169 runs in ten innings during the summer against Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Du Plessis, though, said changes were not inevitable.

“You’re talking about a top-order that is experienced. Talking about them to be replaced is a big call. They’ve done well for a very long time. One series doesn’t make you a bad player.”

Of the younger batsmen, Temba Bavuma, 28, has yet to justify his promotion to the key number four batting position while opener Aiden Markram has been unable to sustain the outstanding form that marked his debut season in 2017/18.

Age is also catching up on the fast bowlers.

Like Amla, Dale Steyn will be 36 when South Africa play their next Test. Although he made a successful return to the side after a lengthy struggle against injuries, he was ineffectual in Port Elizabeth, where he failed to take a wicket.

Vernon Philander is 33 and under increasing scrutiny for missing matches because of injury.

While giving credit to Sri Lanka’s bowlers, Gibson, Du Plessis and batting coach Dale Benkenstein noted that a lack of footage of relative newcomers such as Vishwa Fernando and Kasun Rajitha had hampered South Africa’s preparation.

That claim was denied by veteran West Indian commentator Michael Holding, who noted that players in the past had been able to work out opponents before the days of video analysis.

Benkenstein admitted there may have been some complacency among the South Africans because of Sri Lanka’s lowly reputation ahead of the series.

But this was contradicted by Gibson.

“I don’t agree,” he said. “We prepared as we always do.”

Gibson said the series loss came down to South Africa’s failure to “bat them out of the game” after leading on the first innings in both matches.

“They had very little to lose and we were just not good enough,” he said.

Du Plessis has been candid since became a full-time captain in 2017 about asking for pace-friendly pitches but he said in Port Elizabeth that he had not made specific requests to groundsmen this season.

“There has been a lot of talk about spicy wickets,” said Gibson, “but we only ask for pace and bounce.”

  • Records tumble as Afghan cricket legend grows

Records tumble as Afghan cricket legend grows

The rise of Afghan cricket is one of the great sporting fairy-tales and it is showing no signs of ending after their record-breaking Twenty20 series sweep over Ireland.

    Ishara S. Kodikara / AFP

Spin king Rashid Khan became the first bowler to take four wickets in four balls in a T20 international as Afghanistan convincingly won the third and final match in Dehradun on Sunday.

It came after Afghanistan’s world-record innings of 278-3 on Saturday, including opening batsman Hazratullah Zazai’s 162 off 62 deliveries in which he hammered 16 sixes and 11 fours.

The performances, which come after Afghanistan and Ireland were both awarded Test status in 2017, show the Afghans cannot be taken lightly at this year’s ODI World Cup in England and Wales.

War-torn Afghanistan’s ascent is astonishing as their players learned cricket in Pakistani refugee camps before eventually joining the world’s elite.

Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody led the praise for Khan, who starred in last year’s Indian Premier League T20 tournament.

“Just brilliant, well bowled,” Moody tweeted.

Khan, who has taken 118 wickets in 52 one-day internationals and 75 in 38 T20 games, stood out with his magical leg spin. He bagged 11 wickets in the three games against Ireland.

Afghanistan have made rapid strides since making their World Cup debut in 2015, and they played their first Test — cricket’s prestigious, five-day format — in India last year.

They will now play Ireland in five one-day internationals starting Thursday followed by a one-off Test at Dehradun’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, their adopted home ground.

Afghanistan are preparing to take part in the 10-team World Cup in England and Wales from May 30, where they will hope to set off more fireworks.

Ngidi back, Amla out of one-day squad

Fast bowlers Lungi Ngidi and uncapped Anrich Nortje were named in a 14-man South African squad on Sunday for the first three of five one-day internationals against Sri Lanka.

    Tony Ashby / AFP

Veteran batsman Hashim Amla was not included for the start of South Africa’s last series before the Cricket World Cup in England from May to July – but selection convener Linda Zondi said Amla, 35, remained a senior player.

The series starts at the Wanderers Stadium next Sunday.

“Those players who were in the squad against Pakistan (in January) but who have been left out this time have not been dropped. We need to use the first part of this series to examine all the options that are available to us,” said Zondi. “We know, for example, what Hashim Amla has to offer us and he remains a senior member of our squad.”

Also omitted is JP Duminy, who has not played since October because of a shoulder injury. Zondi said he hoped that Duminy, pursue as a key to South Africa’s World Cup hopes because of his batting, fielding and off-spin bowling, would be fit For the final two matches against Sri Lanka.

Ngidi and Nortje, who made a sensational impression with his pace in a Twenty20 tournament early in the season, have both returned to action in recent weeks. Ngidi suffered a knee injury in Australia in November, while Nortje has been sidelined by an ankle problem.

Zondi said the selectors wanted to see what Nortje, 25, could offer. “Outright pace is not something that you can coach and he looks another exciting addition to our pace arsenal.”

The squad includes only five players who were part of the Test squad beaten 2-0 in a Test series against Sri Lanka which ended on Saturday – captain Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, Wiaan Mulder, Kagiso Rabada and Dale Steyn.

South African squad: Faf du Plessis (captain), Quinton de Kock ( Wkt ), Reeza Hendricks, Imran Tahir, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn , Rassie van der Dussen.

Khan hat-trick seals Afghanistan T20 sweep against Ireland

Rashid Khan claimed a hat-trick to help Afghanistan to a 3-0 series sweep over Ireland after their convincing 32-run victory in the third Twenty20 international on Sunday.

    GIUSEPPE CACACE / AFP

Khan returned impressive figures of 5-27 to keep Ireland down to 178 for eight in their chase of 211 in the north Indian city of Dehradun.

Mohammad Nabi hit 81 off 36 deliveries in Afghanistan’s 210 for seven after being put into bat first on a ground where they posted a T20 international record of 278-3 in the previous match.

Kevin O’Brien and Andy Balbirnie, who made 47, then put on a threatening 96-run second wicket stand to raise hopes of a successful chase but Khan hit back with his leg spin.

He got O’Brien caught behind for 74 but it was the 18th over when the world’s top T20 bowler became the first spinner in the format to take a hat-trick.

Khan got George Dockrell, Shane Getkate and Simi Singh on consecutive deliveries to shut the door on Ireland.

Earlier Nabi demolished the Irish bowling attack as he smashed 6 fours and 7 sixes, hitting the ball to all parts of the ground.

Ireland paceman Boyd Rankin took three wickets but gave away 53 runs in his four overs.

The two teams will now play five one-day internationals starting Thursday followed by a one-off Test at the same venue, which is Afghanistan’s adopted home ground.

  • Ball-tamperer Bancroft smacks unbeaten 138 on red ball return

Ball-tamperer Bancroft smacks unbeaten 138 on red ball return

Cameron Bancroft made an emphatic statement to Australian selectors on Sunday by carrying his bat in an unbeaten 138 on his red-ball return after a ball-tampering ban while downplaying any rift with David Warner.

    Gianluigi Guercia / AFP

The 26-year-old opener completed his nine-month suspension for cheating in late December and has since played Twenty20 cricket for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League.

But his outing for Western Australia against New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield in Sydney was his maiden first-class match since the infamous ‘sandpaper gate’ in Cape Town almost a year ago that rocked the game.

Bancroft was a measure of concentration and discipline as he played the anchor role to be 73 not out overnight and completed his patient ton on Sunday, smashing eight fours and three sixes in his 358-ball innings as his team collapsed around him.

It helped steer Western Australia to 279 all out.

With the Ashes series against England looming this year, it was a timely knock with Australia struggling over the summer to find a consistent Test opener.

They tried Aaron Finch, Marcus Harris, and Joe Burns to varying degrees of success ahead of the return of regular opener Warner and former Test skipper Steve Smith.

The pair are eligible to play again in late March after their one-year bans for the same ball-tampering incident expire.

In an explosive interview during the Boxing Day Test against India in December, Bancroft alleged it was Warner who asked him to alter the ball in South Africa.

Some pundits suggested he had thrown Warner “under the bus” and that their relationship was now untenable.

But Bancroft insisted they spoke regularly and had been supporting each other.

“Yeah, I’ve spoken to Dave… I think all of us, including Dave, have been really challenged through this period of time,” he told broadcaster ABC on Saturday evening.

“I know that all three of us have really stuck by each other and looked after each other well. I guess moving forward there will be great lessons for all of us, including Dave.

“That’s something we’ve all shared with each other and something I’ve certainly shared with Dave.”

Despite being criticised for the timing of his Boxing Day interview, Bancroft — who will play for Durham in the English summer to further his Ashes chances — said he had no regrets.

“There were some really extreme lessons I learned through my journey that I wanted others to connect and to share with,” he said.

“If other people were triggered by that, I guess that’s their battle to face.

“But if I was able to touch people through some parts of my journey, and to help them I guess breakthrough (in) their lives, that was my sole intention for that,” Bancroft said.

  • Andre Russell replaces injured Kemar Roach for final two ODIs against England

Andre Russell replaces injured Kemar Roach for final two ODIs against England

With Kemar Roach struggling with back problems, Windies have decided to re-call their all-rounder Andre Russell to the squad for the remaining two ODIs against England.

    Randy Brooks / AFP

Russell, whose last ODI came against Bangladesh in July 2018, has had his fair share of injury issues of late, which has led to him missing his side’s Tour of India last year. Making a decent comeback following the lay-off this year though, The 30-year-old all-rounder has featured in Bangladesh Premier League as well the ongoing Pakistan Premier League.

Speaking of Russell’s inclusion, the Chairman of Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel, Courtney Browne admitted that despite his recent knee injuries, they remain optimistic about his ability with the bat.

“Kemar Roach had to be withdrawn from the ODI series due to injury and will be replaced in the squad by the experienced Andre Russell for the last two matches. We believe Russell will add value to the squad,” Courtney Browne, Chairman of CWI Selection Panel, said.

“We are well aware that although Andre’s bowling may be limited due to a knee problem, his tremendous batting ability to power the ball in the back end of the game will be an asset to the team. The panel take this opportunity to wish captain Jason Holder and his team all the best for the remainder of matches in the series.”

As far as the series is concerned, Windies recently drew odds in their favour by winning the second of their five-match series by 26 runs, hence levelling the series 1-1. Russell, on his part, will not be instilled directly for their Third game, which is due to be played on the 25th of February, but will be made available for the fourth and the fifth fixture.

The fourth ODI is set to be played on February 27 in Grenada, while the fifth and final game will be held in St. Lucia on March 2.

  • Afghanistan hit world record T20 score as Zazai demolishes Ireland bowlers

Afghanistan hit world record T20 score as Zazai demolishes Ireland bowlers

Hazratullah Zazai smashed the ball to every corner of the ground, and even out of the stadium, as Afghanistan racked up a world record T20 score of 278-3 in a crushing demolition of Ireland on Saturday.

The 20-year-old Zazai’s unbeaten 162 included 16 sixes and 11 fours, delighting Afghan fans in the Indian city of Dehradun.

His haul of sixes was another record, as was his stand of 236 with fellow opener Usman Ghani and the 22 sixes scored in all by Afganistan’s players.

    STR / AFP

Ireland captain Paul Stirling also hit a six off the first ball of his side’s innings as they chased a mammoth 13.95 runs an over to keep up.

But they ended on 194-6 and Afghanistan won by 84 runs to wrap up the three-match series with a game to spare.

“It was a pretty disappointing night,” said Stirling. “We need to regroup now.”

The night of cricket fireworks belonged to Afghanistan — who overtook Australia’s 260-3 against Sri Lanka in 2016 — and Zazai, who plundered his giant innings off just 62 balls.

“I just wanted to play my natural game and today was my day,” he said. “The wicket was good for batting.”

    Sixes galore

After managing just seven runs from their first two overs, Zazai and Ghani flailed the Irish bowlers, who from then barely managed an over without conceding a six.

Zazai made his century off just 42 balls — the second quickest in T20 internationals — completed with the ninth six of his innings. Four of the sixes came off Kevin O’Brien in the 17th over which reaped 28 runs in all.

One giant hit off Shane Gelkate went over the stands and out of the ground.

Zazai’s stocks have risen dramatically despite missing a place in the Indian Premier League this season.

In October, he became only the third batsman to hit six sixes in a T20 over for his Afghanistan Premier League side Kabul Zwanan.

He equalled the record for the fastest T20 half century in 12 balls in the same match.

Stirling hardly knew who to throw into the breach as a bowler.

Boyd Rankin finally claimed a wicket for the Irish when Ghani — who made 73 off 43 balls — played a careless shot over long-on that Joshua Little caught diving as he ran in from the boundary.

While Stirling and Kevin O’Brien were no slouches, they never kept up with the mountainous run rate, which had risen to 17 by the 10th over.

Afghanistan’s star bowler Rashid Khan came on for the 11th over and was furious when captain Asghar Afghan spilled a relatively simple catch off his first ball to give O’Brien a chance with Ireland on 109.

O’Brien was bowled in the next over by Fareed Ahmad for a 37 which included two sixes.

Rashid bowled Andy Balbirnie in the following over for two and Stirling started to run out of reliable partners.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman claimed Stirling — who as a consolation made Ireland’s top T20 score of 91 off 50 balls — when he was caught by replacement Najeeb Tarakai on the boundary.

The final play of the series is on Sunday. The two play five one-day internationals from February 28 and a one-off Test in March.

  • Ab de Villiers roped in by Middlesex for Vitality T20 Blast 2019

Ab de Villiers roped in by Middlesex for Vitality T20 Blast 2019

Former South African batsman Ab de Villiers has been roped in by Middlesex County Cricket Club for the upcoming Vitality T20 Blast.

    Chandan Khanna / AFP

De Villiers, who has scored more than 20,000 runs in his career, announced his retirement from all formats of the game back in May 2018. He, however, did mention that his career in domestic T20 leagues will go on for a few more years. Acquiring de Villiers remains a massive coup for Middlesex, who will look to get over the ghosts of their past this season, having finished their previous one on the bottom of their group.

That being said, the 35-year-old has become the second marquee foreign acquisition for Middlesex, having already signed Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

“I have always wanted to play county cricket, and I am very much looking forward to joining Middlesex for the Vitality Blast. Playing at Lord’s is always a wonderful privilege, and I’m looking forward to the match at Richmond, a beautiful ground in South-west London. That will be a great experience,” De Villiers was quoted in an interview with the club.

Following his retirement, de Villiers – who has starred in every edition of the Indian Premier League since its inception in 2008 – continued showing his class in the Pakistan Super League, Mzansi Super League as well as an impressing showing in the Bangladesh Premier League.
