Both players had one demerit point added to their disciplinary records of a first offence.

  • Prithvi Shaw back in training after Australia injury

Prithvi Shaw back in training after Australia injury

India’s teenage batting marvel Prithvi Shaw has returned to training after recovering from the ankle injury that cruelly ruled him out of their historic Test series triumph in Australia.

The 19-year-old, often compared to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, has been batting in the nets at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore ahead of India’s Mushtaq Ali domestic Twenty20 tournament.

The Mumbai batsman scored a sparkling century on his Test debut against the West Indies in October, but he then missed India’s first Test series win in Australia after injuring himself in a warm-up match.

“I felt sad as it was a good opportunity for me to play the quality Australian bowling line-up. I was a bit upset,” Shaw said, according to the Indian Express.

“But some things aren’t in your hands. Now I am looking forward to the Mushtaq Ali tournament to find my touch and gain my confidence back,” the diminutive opener added.

Shaw landed awkwardly while attempting a catch during a warm-up game in Sydney, and left the tour to undergo rehabilitation. India won the four-match series 2-1.

Shaw, who has played just two Tests, became the youngest Indian batsman to score a century on debut when he hit 134 in the Rajkot Test at the age of 18 years, 10 months and 25 days.

Only Tendulkar, who went on compile a record 51 Test centuries, has scored a ton at a younger age among Indian players after making 119 not out in his ninth Test aged 17.

Shaw also made 70 and 33 not out in the second Test against the West Indies and was named man of the series, which the hosts swept 2-0.

  • West Indies bowler Gabriel suspended after Root exchange

West Indies bowler Gabriel suspended after Root exchange

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel was Wednesday suspended for four one-day internationals after breaching the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct over comments made to England’s Joe Root.

Gabriel has been fined 75 per cent of his match fee for the incident during the third Test in St Lucia and handed three demerit points, taking his total to eight within a 24-month period.

The nature of the paceman’s words is not known but England captain Root was picked up on stump microphones telling Gabriel: “Don’t use it as an insult. There’s nothing wrong with being gay.”

A statement from the ICC said: “During the third day of the St Lucia Test against England on Monday, Gabriel was found guilty of breaching article 2.13 of the ICC code of conduct… which relates to “personal abuse of a player, player Support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match”, following an incident with Root.

“Gabriel admitted the offence after the end of the match on Tuesday and accepted the sanction.”

West Indies won the Test series against England 2-1.

Root received praise for his response to Gabriel, made in the process of compiling a century, with fellow sportsmen, politicians and LGBT equality charity Stonewall all applauding his stance.

Gabriel, 30, already had five demerit points against his name for two earlier incidents. With the addition of the latest three demerit points, he has reached the threshold of eight demerit points, converted into four suspension points.

Four suspension points equate to a ban from two Tests or four ODIs/Twenty20 internationals, whichever come first for the player.

Gabriel was in November suspended from a Test in Bangladesh when he reached the threshold of four demerit points.

The five-match one-day series starts in Barbados on February 20.

  • Steyn takes four as South Africa lead in Durban

Steyn takes four as South Africa lead in Durban

Fast bowler Dale Steyn took four wickets as South Africa claimed 44-run first innings lead at tea on the second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead on Thursday.

Sri Lanka was bowled out for 191 with an early tea taken when the last wicket fell.

Steyn took four for 48. He was denied a 27th Test five-wicket haul during a 10-over post-lunch spell when tailender Kasun Rajitha gloved him to gully but Dean Elgar spilt a simple chance.

Steyn took his career tally to 437 Test wickets, passing India’s Kapil Dev (434) and drawing level with Stuart Broad of England in joint seventh place on the all-time list.

Kusal Perera top-scored for Sri Lanka with an aggressive 51 off 63 balls. When he was caught at deep cover off Steyn an early end to the innings

But Lasith Embuldeniya and Rajitha defied the bowlers for 55 minutes, adding 32 for the ninth wicket facing emerges to sth.

The stand was eventually ended when Rajitha was run out by sharp fielding by Aiden Markram at short leg when he strayed out of his crease while playing a defensive shot.

Test debutant Embuldeniya was struck several times before he was last man out for 24.

  • South Africa admit ‘caught off guard’ by rejuvenated Sri Lanka

South Africa admit ‘caught off guard’ by rejuvenated Sri Lanka

Top-scorer Quinton de Kock admitted South Africa were “caught off guard” when Sri Lanka bowled them out for 235 on the first day of the first Test at Kingsmead on Wednesday.

Underdogs Sri Lanka, seemingly in disarray going into the match, reached 49 for one at the close to finish the day in a strong position.

Left-arm opening bowler Vishwa Fernando and right-arm seamer Kasun Rajitha, playing in their fourth and fifth Tests respectively, did the major damage. Fernando took four for 62 and Rajitha claimed three for 68.

“We were a bit unaware of the new guys. I think they caught us off guard,” said De Kock who made 80.

“We had good game plans against (opening bowler) Suranga Lakmal but the two new guys were unseen before. They bowled really well, they didn’t miss their lengths often and they made us work hard for what we got.”

Asked what specific problems Fernando and Rajitha caused, De Kock said: “The angle of their bowling, the skills they had, their actions, the skiddiness, the bounce. They are two solid bowlers and they will give us trouble throughout the series, so We will just have to keep our eyes open for them.”

Fernando got extravagant swing early in the day after new captain Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and sent South Africa in, while Lakmal got a steep bounce in an opening spell of one for six in seven overs.

Fernando arguably owed his place in the team to the fact that three of Sri Lanka’s leading fast bowlers were missing because of injury.

But he produced a superb opening spell, having Dean Elgar caught behind and bowling Aiden Markram with a ball which swung back into the stumps.

Fernando said he enjoyed bowling in South African conditions compared to those in Sri Lanka, where he said fast bowlers tended to struggle on unhelpful pitches.

“The ball was swinging in the morning,” he said.

He had Dean Elgar caught behind for nought with his fourth ball and there was still no run on the board two balls later when an appeal for leg before wicket was turned down by umpire Aleem Dar, although replays showed he should have given out.

By the time Karunaratne signalled for a review, the players were told they had taken too long -– although it was shown afterwards they were three seconds inside the permitted 15 seconds for a request.

    ‘Umpire’s word’

“It is the umpire’s word,” said Fernando.

The lapse proved inexpensive, however, as Amla was caught at second slip off Lakmal for three before Fernando produced the ball of the day to bowl Markram for 11.

South Africa were 17 for three at that stage. Temba Bavuma and Faf du Plessis put on 72 for the fourth wicket before Du Plessis was caught down the leg side off Rajitha for 35.

Bavuma looked the most assured of the South African batsmen but was run out for 47 off 68 balls, with seven fours, when a straight drive by De Kock richocheted off bowler Fernando’s boot into the stumps at the bowler’s end.

De Kock, batting at number six because South Africa picked five specialist bowlers, found himself batting with the tail. He hit 80 off 94 balls before he was the last man out.

Sri Lanka lost Lahiru Thirimanne, caught behind off Dale Steyn for nought, but Karunaratne batted confidently to be 28 not out at the close, while new cap Oshada Fernando went on the attack when Du Plessis turned to spin bowling as the light faded to finish on 17 not out.

Sri Lanka has lost six of their most recent seven Tests and was disrupted by injuries and several changes in personnel, including the dropping of regular captain Dinesh Chandimal.

  • Injured Hazlewood confident of being fit for World Cup

Injured Hazlewood confident of being fit for World Cup

Australian pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood said Thursday he was confident of being fit for the World Cup, with scans this week set to determine when he can make a comeback.

The vice-captain missed Australia’s two recent Tests against Sri Lanka with a back injury and has also been ruled out of their upcoming one-day tours against India and Pakistan.

Cricket Australia physiotherapist David Beakley previously said he was suffering an early stage stress fracture, similar to one that sidelined him for six months last year.

Hazlewood told reporters he was targeting World Cup warm-up games for his return, with a follow-up scan on Friday set to shed more light on his progress.

“I think we’ll know a lot more after tomorrow, to be honest. Hopefully, in the coming weeks we’ll start working through it,” he said.

“Hopefully it’s going along to plan.

“Everything feels fine so training’s coming along nicely, progressing every week. I think we’ll just work back from the World Cup really and make sure everything’s right for that, which gives me plenty of time.”

Australia play their first World Cup group game against Afghanistan on June 1, with three practice matches scheduled at home against New Zealand in May.

Fellow fast bowler Mitchell Starc is also struggling with injury after suffering a “substantial” muscle tear in the final Test against Sri Lanka.

He has been ruled out of the India series, with his availability for Pakistan not yet known.
