Australia batsman Matt Renshaw will play for Kent at the start of English season, featuring in the One-Day Cup as well as early County Championship fixtures.

The opener is hoping his spell with Kent will help force his way into Australia’s Ashes plans ahead of their tour to England later this year.

Renshaw, who played in England for Somerset last season, was given his Australia debut at the age of just 20 in 2016 and has made one Test century to date.

He has struggled to regain his place since making way for Cameron Bancroft before the 2017-18 Ashes series in Australia.

Paul Downton, Kent’s director of cricket, told the club website: “Matt is a young talent who is very hungry for success.

“He has the ability to strengthen our batting line-up, which will be key at the beginning of the season with both Sam (Billings) and Joe (Denly) away playing in the IPL.

“We look forward to welcoming Matt into the squad.”

    Windies captain Holder joins Northamptonshire

West Indies captain Jason Holder will play for Northamptonshire during the first part of the 2019 English season, the club announced Thursday.

Holder, 27, has led the West Indies to an unassailable 2-0 lead in their ongoing three-Test series at home to England and is currently ranked as the world’s top all-rounder.

The towering fast-medium bowler and hard-hitting batsman will be available for Northamptonshire’s opening two County Championship matches and their first six One-Day Cup games, with Holder set to lead the West Indies in the World Cup in England later in the season.

“England is somewhere I’ve wanted to play for a long time and I’m looking forward to the experience of county cricket and testing myself in the different conditions,” Holder, a veteran of 37 Tests, 85 one-day internationals and eight T20 internationals, told the Northamptonshire website.

“I’m hopeful from a personal point that it will provide me a good opportunity of acclimatising to English conditions and getting some time in the middle ahead of the World Cup in England.”

Holder, banned from this week’s third Test in St Lucia as a result of cumulative slow over-rate offences, is set to arrive in England ahead of the new season to play in Northamptonshire’s opening second division County Championship match against Middlesex.

  • Test cricket is ‘dying’, says ICC chairman

Test cricket is ‘dying’, says ICC chairman

Test cricket is “dying”, the chairman of the sport’s governing body warned Thursday, adding the new world championship could help save the longest format of the game.

While Tests in Australia and England still draw sizeable crowds, filling stadiums and boosting interest in the five-day game has been a challenge in the rest of the cricket world for years.

    Indranil Mukherjee/ AFP

“We are trying to see whether (the) Test championship can generate interest, because Test cricket is actually dying to be honest,” International Cricket Council chairman Shashank Manohar told reporters in Dhaka.

“So to improve the situation, we are trying ways and means. The (ICC) board… came to a conclusion that if we start a Test championship, it would keep Test cricket alive and generate more interest in the game.”

The Ashes series between arch-rivals England and Australia will kick off the World Test Championship in July, and the two double sides will face off in a final in 2021.

Manohar, who is in Dhaka to watch the final of the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 tournament, said the shortest version of the game now provides maximum ratings for broadcasters.

“Nowadays, people don’t have five days… to watch a Test match. From 10 to 5, everybody has their own job to do so it is very difficult for them to watch (Tests),” he said.

T20s are “over in 3.5 hours, like watching a movie. socks, it is picking up very fast”.

    Olympic challenge

Manohar, a former president of the Indian cricket board, said the sport still faces challenges in its bid to become more global, including being added to the Olympics.

ICC officials in the past have expressed their willingness to submit an application for cricket to be included in the Paris 2024 Games.

But there are logistical obstacles, such as suitable venues for cricket, Manohar admitted, saying there is some way to go before it is featured on world sport’s biggest stage.

“There are certain countries which are still not convinced whether to participate or not,” he added.

The only time cricket was played at the Olympics was in 1900, with just two teams — Britain

  • Sharma claims record as India cruise past New Zealand

Sharma claims record as India cruise past New Zealand

Rohit Sharma became the highest run scorer in Twenty20 international history Friday as India romped to a seven-wicket win over New Zealand in the second T20 in Auckland.

Sharma top-scored for the tourists with 50 as India chased down New Zealand’s modest 159-run target in 18.5 overs, levelling the three-match series at 1-1.

Sharma’s knock was his 16th T20 half century and took his career tally in the format to 2,288 runs, overtaking New Zealand’s Martin Guptill on 2,272.

The 31-year-old made his T20 debut against England in 2007 and has played 92 matches, averaging 33.15.

However Sharma, who is standing in as captain while Virat Kohli is rested, was more interested in focusing on India’s performance than his individual achievements.

His team dominated New Zealand with bat and ball to avenge an 80-run loss in the opening fixture in Wellington — India’s heaviest ever T20 defeat.

“I’m very pleased with how we bowled and then we were quite clinical with the bat as well,” he said.

“We were expecting a performance like that, we’ve got quality in our side but we didn’t execute our plans in the first game.

“We learned from our mistakes and we got the reward for it.”

India’s bowling attack was much improved and man-of-the-match Krunal Pandya took three for 28 as they restricted New Zealand to 158 for eight.

Colin de Grandhomme gave the Black Caps some hope, hitting a maiden T20 half century off 27 balls as part of a 77-run partnership with Ross Taylor, who made 42.

But the hosts could not break the shackles and tight bowling at the end of the innings fixed them from taking advantage of Eden Park’s short boundaries.

“We perhaps missed a trick or two with the bat,” New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said after his team laboured to 158 for eight in their 20 overs.

“Some smarter options might have given us another 20 runs at the death that would have been really helpful on that wicket.”

Whereas India had no such problem in reply, making a flying start with Sharma leading the way.

His 50 — part of a 79-run opening stand with Shikhar Dhawan — included four sixes and three fours off 28 balls.

Dhawan made 30, Rishabh Pant 40 and MS Dhoni brought the crowd to its feet with an entertaining cameo of 20 as India made 162 for three without looking troubled.

“That opening partnership for India really took the game away from us,” Williamson said.

The final match of the series is at Hamilton on Sunday.

Afghanistan have dropped mystery spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman from their Test squad for their upcoming series against Ireland scheduled to be played on the 21st of February in Dehradun.

Rahman was part of Afghanistan’s only Test against India last year, where he bowled 15 overs and conceded 75 runs picking up a solitary wicket.

Three uncapped players have been called up to the Afghanistan squad instead. Left arm bowler Waqar Salamkheil, batsman Ikram Ali Khil and all-rounder Sharafuddin Ashraf have been added to the 14-man squad.

Afghanistan and Ireland will play three T20Is, five ODIs and the one-off Test starting February 21. The Test match will be the second game for both teams having made their long-format debuts in 2018, against India and Pakistan respectively.

Squad: Asghar Afghan (C), Mohammad Shahzad, Ihsan Janat, Javed Ahmadi, Rahmat Shah, Nasir Jamal, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Ikram Ali Khil, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Wafadar Momand, Yamin Ahmadzai, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Waqar Salamkheil

Gayle returns to Windies squad for England ODIs

West Indies recalled veteran batsman Chris Gayle on Thursday for the first two one-day internationals against England in preparation for this year’s World Cup.

The hard-hitting, 39-year-old Gayle last played for West Indies during a home series against Bangladesh last July, and could renew an explosive opening partnership alongside Evin Lewis.

Lewis and Gayle both missed the recent ODI series in India and Bangladesh but have been included as part of a 14-man squad that saw left-handed batsman Nicholas Pooran called up for the first time.

West Indies and England will contest five one-dayers following the conclusion of the Test series, in which the hosts hold an unassailable 2-0 lead ahead of the finale in St Lucia on Saturday.

“As we continue our Cricket World Cup preparations, the upcoming series against the top ranked ODI side is a great opportunity for us to gauge where we are as a team,” said West Indies chairman of selectors Courtney Browne.

“This allows us to identify any areas that need addressing relating to selection and also helps the coaching staff to fine tune their game strategy.”

Gayle holds the West Indian record for most ODI hundreds with 23, and is their second-leading runscorer in the 50-over format with 9,727 runs — trailing only Brian Lara (10,405).

His 215 against Zimbabwe in the 2015 World Cup also represents the highest limited-overs score by a West Indies batsman.

“We welcome the return of Chris Gayle who missed the last two series and Ashley Nurse from injury. We are pleased to introduce Nicholas Pooran to the ODI cricket for the first time,” said Browne.

“He is clearly a young player with undoubted talent and we believe he can add value to our middle order.”

Browne said fast bowler Shannon Gabriel would be considered for later in the series, although experienced batsman Marlon Samuels is unavailable due to a knee injury.

Squad: Jason Holder (captain), Fabian Allen, Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Chris Gayle, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Evin Lewis, Ashley Nurse, Keemo Paul, Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell, Kemar Roach, Oshane Thomas

  • Former captain Ponting appointed Australian assistant coach for World Cup

Former captain Ponting appointed Australian assistant coach for World Cup

Former national skipper Ricky Ponting was Friday recruited to work alongside coach Justin Langer, focusing mainly on the batsmen, for the looming World Cup in England where Australia will defend their title.

The appointment of the vastly experienced Ponting, who played at five World Cups and won at three, comes a day after bowling coach David Saker quit.

    Glyn Kirk/ AFP

Cricket Australia said his addition as assistant coach would see him focus on working with the ODI batting group, while current batting coach Graeme Hick concentrates on preparing for the Ashes.

Ponting is a close ally of Langer, who said he was thrilled to have his friend and former colleague back in the fold.

“I know he will be a valuable mentor to not just the batting group, but the broader squad as we focus our attention on defending our World Cup title,” said Langer.

“Ricky and I have worked together with the Australian men’s team in the past, he is an extremely driven coach who is fully invested in the players development and improving Australian cricket.

“He has an impressive understanding of the game, he knows what’s required to prepare and perform at the elite level, and we can’t wait for him to get started working with the squad,” he added.

Ponting played 375 one-dayers and 168 Tests, also working as an assistant with Australia’s Twenty20 side in 2017 and 2018.

He accompanied Langer during the West Australian’s first tour — to England — after taking over as head coach from Darren Lehmann in April last year following the ball-tampering scandal.

Ponting will start after Australia’s upcoming one-day tours against India and Pakistan.

“I’m really excited to be joining the coaching group,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed my previous short-term roles with the ODI and T20 teams but World Cups take on a whole different meaning for me.

“I have enormous confidence in the players available to the selectors and know we will be as tough to beat as any team.”

  • Bowler gives away 17 runs off one legal delivery in Big Bash League

Bowler gives away 17 runs off one legal delivery in Big Bash League

With the gentleman’s game getting shorter with the popularity of T20 cricket, the plight of a bowler gets all the more pitiful with the batters getting full leeway of the shorter formats. The pressures of bowling in the death in the shorter formats of the game is extreme With with batsmen always looking to score big.

    Sky Sports Cricket/ AFP

Such was the case in a Big Bash League game between the Melbourne Renegades and Hobart Hurricanes. The Renegades were set a stiff target of 184 to win; but were handed a lifeline in the very first over when pacer Riley Meredith gave away 17 runs off with Only one legal being bowled.

After his first three deliveries, Meredith had given away only one run, but then he overstepped by a distance to grant a free-hit to Aaron Finch. Finch had to wait for his freebie delivery as the very next ball was a wide down the leg Side that was beyond the reach of the keeper and went off for four byes. The next two deliveries were no balls which were also hit to the boundary by Finch. Riley’s nightmarish end to his barrage extras ended the next ball which was flicked towards mid- Wicket for a single.

Despite Meredith conceding 17 runs off just one legal delivery and 23 off that first over, the Hurricanes managed to claw their way back into the game with some efficient bowling Jofra Archer and D’Arcy Short, as they ended up winning by 16 runs.

  • All-rounder Mulder added to South Africa Test squad

All-rounder Mulder added to South Africa Test squad

Batting all-rounder Wiaan Mulder has been included in South Africa’s squad for two Test lists against Sri Lanka, starting in Durban on Wednesday.

Mulder, 20, was added to the 13-man squad which beat Pakistan in all three Tests in a home series earlier this season.

“Wiaan has been part of our strategic thinking in developing a batting all-rounder for the Test squad for some time,” said selection convener Linda Zondi in announcing the squad on Thursday.

    Cricket South Africa/ AFP

Mulder was part of the Test squad for a series against Australia last season but did not make the starting eleven. He suffered an ankle injury during a one-day international against Zimbabwe last September but made a successful return to first-class cricket for the Lions Franchise last month.

A notable omission is fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, who is recovering from a knee injury sustained during a limited-overs tour of Australia in November.

Ngidi has been training with the South African limited-overs squads in recent weeks but Zondi said the selectors were taking a cautious approach. “We are not going to rush him back into international action until he has had the time to regain full match fitness,” Said Zondi.

The Sri Lankan team were due to arrive in South Africa on Thursday after suffering two heavy defeats in a Test series in Australia.

Sri Lanka are likely to face a difficult task with an inexperienced team, which includes only six of the players defeated in all three Tests in South Africa two seasons ago. Their squad includes nine players who will be making their first tour of South Africa.

South Africa’s fast bowlers were dominant in the Tests against Pakistan and the Sri Lankans are likely to face a pace barrage, although the Test venues in Durban and Port Elizabeth are the least pace-friendly of South Africa’s regular Test grounds.

South African Test squad: Faf du Plessis (captain), Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock (wkt), Dean Elgar, Zubayr Hamza, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Duanne Olivier, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn

Vidarbha beat Saurashtra to claim second successive Indian domestic title

In the Indian domestic cricket circuit, team Vidarbha defeated team Saurashtra by 70 runs in the final of the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy.

    Mohammad Kaif/ Twitter

Left-arm spinner Aditya Sarvate was the pick of the bowlers, managing 5 and 6 wickets in the first and second innings respectively to help his side to a second successive Ranji trophy. He was named as the man of the match for his cumulative 11 wickets and scoring a crucial 49 in the second innings of Vidarbha’s batting.

The Vidarbha team, who are coached by former Indian player Chandrakant Pandit and boast the likes of former Test opener Wassim Jaffer and pacer Umesh Yadav in their starting 11, managed a meagre five-run lead after both teams had batted once. Then on a track that was turning square, fighting knocks by Mohit Kale and Sarwate managed to get to a score of 200.

Sarwate then shone with the ball as well, picking up the wicket of India’s Test stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara for a score of zero. Vishvaraj Jadeja scored a gritty half-century but fell short of partners in the other end with his team eventually being bowled out for 127.
